Do You Need a Sky Daddy?—How Religion Preys on the Weak

God, the Father watches us all everywhere.

Who’s your sky daddy? (Photo credit: angelofsweetbitter2009)

What is God?  Is he/she/it your daddy in the sky?  Do you think that they are really looking down on earth and keeping a checklist of everything you say and do here?  If you don’t say and do the right things, watch out!  God is going to cast you into a lake of fire for all eternity.

When did your first become aware of God?  Did you just wake up one morning and suddenly realize there was one?  Or did someone else tell you all about him?

If you are truly ignorant of the great sky daddy, will he still cast you into the fiery pits of Hell?

A lot of religious people avoid these questions when I, or anyone else I know, ask them.

Another important question is:  do you need a sky daddy?  Why do you need one?  Why can’t you live independently and make your own way in life without living your life according to something you have never seen much less spoken to?  Doesn’t that seem kind of silly?

Now I am going to say something that will probably shock you:  I believe there is a God that created the universe (I am a Deist); however, the God that religions have made up is a sadistic jerk who gets off on genocide.  And that God, ladies and gentlemen, does not exist.  If he does exist, people are pretty stupid to worship him.

Have you ever noticed that a lot of people come to God, and religion, when they have hit rock bottom in life?  They have had trials with violent crime, drugs, alcohol, disease, etc. and suddenly God comes to them and saves them from themselves.

Did God really come to these people or did a mortal have something to do with this sudden revelation?

Religions—all of them—are known to prey on the weak and pick off the undesirable people among the human race.  Missionaries, priests, and other men of the cloth convince millions that they were blessed with the special ability to read God’s mind.  They go into foreign lands and teach the ignorant masses all about God and tell them that they must be saved.

Indeed, the Catholic Church has done this for centuries.  And if people do not comply with what they are taught, they are tortured and killed in the name of God.

These religious types come to you when you are at your must vulnerable and convince you that you must have God in your life and you must do his will.  Read the Bible—and do not stray from the Word!  God will smite you for it.  If you’re a really good little boy or girl, you’ll get a mansion in the sky and get to hang out with some pretty cool people.  If you’re bad, you will be pitchforked by demons for all eternity.

If  I were still an impressionable little child who was scared of monsters under the bed, I just might believe that BS.  And that is exactly what religinuts are counting on….

God gave us reason not religion. Man created religion to control people, not to teach them about God or Gods.  The things they do and say make that obvious.

When Was the Last Time You Thanked God for Anything?

If you read some of my earlier posts on God, it might seem that I hate him or that I don’t believe in him.  That is actually not true at all.  I believe in God, but dislike some of his followers.

I am a Deist—a word that really isn’t thrown around a lot these days.  It’s a religious belief that dates back to the Enlightenment and people like Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine.

Fun Fact:  Did you know that Thomas Paine, the author of the inspiring pamphlet Common Sense, was shunned by the public during his lifetime for his religious beliefs?  People were afraid to associate with someone who wasn’t a Christian, and who openly criticized the Christian religion.

thank godAs a Deist, I believe that the world was created by God, but he doesn’t dictate our every move here.  He gave us free will to do whatever it is we choose with his creation.  He’s not sitting in Heaven with a big tablet, ticking every right or wrong we do.  He’s not going to damn us, or reward us, for this, that, and what have you.  I think God has better things to do than that. God Gave Us Reason, Not Religion

How many of you are aware of the fact that religion is a man-made thing?  It is a way to control people, and to make them obey and observe whatever absurd customs a society comes up with at any given time.   Do you think God gave us religion?  If so, which one is the right one?  How do you know it is the right one?

As a Deist, I believe that God created the world and all mankind; he gave us minds to think, to create.  And…that’s about it.

Many religions in the world today paint this picture of the Creator as some sort of sky daddy who will smack your hands and punish you if you don’t do what He says.  However, if you start thinking for yourself, and start studying history, you will find that a lot of the so-called “sins” that God hates are things that society has frowned upon at one time or another.

Where, I ask you, is the proof that God wants you to speak and behave in a certain way to get into Heaven?  The Bible?  The Bible, my friends, has been tainted by translations.  And there is no proof, even if it weren’t spoiled by people with an agenda, that it was divinely inspired.  If it were, it honestly just makes God look like a raging maniac who changes His mind a lot, don’t you think?  Other religious texts can be viewed the same way.

Let’s just face facts:   man has created God in his own image.  This is why things like organized religion exist.  People want God to behave in a certain way because it justifies their own prejudices.  The sooner we can come to terms with this, the better off our world would be.

Yes, I believe in God.  I am not an Atheist.  But I am not someone who is going to fall for the baloney that Christians and other religions want to peddle about God being an angry bigot.  He’s not.   And why on earth people would choose to worship someone or something that has such anger issues is beyond me.  I’d rather think of God as someone who created  a complex universe and put us in charge of taking care of it.

We make up all these crazy theories about God because we simply need an excuse to believe He’s there.  All you have to do is look around and you will see evidence in creation.  And if you don’t see it, that’s okay.

Just remember, God gave us reason, not religion.  We have minds, and unfortunately for many of us we refuse to use them because religions are forcing us to stop thinking.  Are you going to continue giving in to your religion, or are you going to open your mind and start using it the way the Creator intended?

Is God the Real Key to Happiness?

I am sure that my handful of readers have noticed by now that I have a theme going this week, which happens to be the very first week of this blog’s existence.  The theme has been God and things related to God and religion.  If you don’t dig God, don’t worry, I will be blogging about many other things starting next week, but may revisit the God/religion topic from time to time depending on my mood.

Now that I have that out of the way, let’s return to the topic at hand—Is God the real key to happiness?

Each day, if you go out looking for it, you will find people who say that God (especially the Abrahamic version of God) has changed their life completely.  Finding God was the best thing they ever did for themselves because before God and salvation, their life was empty and miserable.  God changed all that and made them whole again.

That’s interesting, isn’t it?  Have you noticed a pattern with many people who claim to have been “saved”?  More often than not, they find Jesus when they are desperate, have hit rock bottom.  There is always some sort of turmoil in their lives that makes them wake up and accept God into their heart.  But once God sets up shop in their left ventricle, all their troubles miraculously pack up and leave!

They have proof that God exists because before they knew God, they were poor and hungry, couldn’t pay their bills.  But once God came into their life, the money started rolling in.  They couldn’t stop it even if they tried!  They were sick or depressed, and there was no hope for them.  But once God came into their life, they were healed by the blood of Jesus!  They didn’t need any medical doctors or psychiatrists.  God was their cure.

You see stories like that all the time on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson.   And sometime during the show, he closes his eyes and sees lepers and limbless wretches, and heals them through the power of Jesus.

And back in the days when I was a true believer,  I often wondered why I was not filled with this awesome joy, this windfall of cash.   Sometimes (I’ll even venture to say most of the time) I felt that God was ignoring me completely.  If God was the real key to happiness, then why wasn’t I happy?  I couldn’t give a testimony like the ones I had seen my whole life.

Maybe I was doing it wrong…

Or maybe, just maybe, the people who claim they suddenly found happiness when they found God are full of it and want to scam hardworking people out of their money.   Think about it.  Immediately following wonderful testimonies from people, you will almost always see an advertisement for a book, CD, or DVDs that will help you on the road to salvation.  You get it “free” with a “love offering” of “X” amount of dollars.

How do people not recognize this as a scam?  This runs along the same lines of all the e-mail and phone scams that the news warns you about every evening, and these so-called preachers and evangelists have done it for a lot longer than the Nigerian limbless boy who needs surgery.

God might not be the key to your happiness, brothers and sisters, but your money is the key to someone else’s.

Think about it.

God is An Angry Bigot

Christians want to save your soul.  And how do they propose to do it, you ask?  They want to scare you into believing in God by telling you if you don’t accept him, you will be cast into a lake of fire and burn for all eternity.  That’s a pretty good way of bringing lost souls to salvation, don’t you think?

They tell you that God loves everyone, but if you don’t love him back, he will cast plagues on you, kill your children, and make your life a living hell.  Hmm.  This makes God sound like a psychotic ex lover, doesn’t it?

The Holy Bible is full of stories of genocide, famine, disease, and many other afflictions caused by God himself, and Christians eat this stuff up and think it is okay.  And if someone questions any of it, they say it’s being misinterpreted, taken out of context.

So my question to Christians is—Why?  Why do you choose to believe in a God that comes across as an angry bigot?  Are you so afraid of going to Hell that you refuse to question a being that is clearly a homicidal maniac?  Who in their right mind would want to worship a God like this?  It makes no sense.

Christians need to understand that modern people are moving away from the “fear” of God because it is clearly unreasonable to respect and worship a deity that is portrayed as an abusive jerk.  If you want to, that’s fine, but don’t get all bent out of shape because you don’t understand why people think you are insane.  I’m telling you now why people do.

I want you to sit back and really think about this for a minute, everyone.  Do you really believe, with all your heart, that God is sitting up there in Heaven keeping tabs of every profane word you utter, every impure thought you have, every bad thing you do?  Do you really think that he cares that much?  Why?  Doesn’t it seem more reasonable to think that a lot of these so-called sins are things that simply make mortals uncomfortable, so they have come up with the convenient excuse that God hates them and will damn you if you do them?

Now I know that there are plenty of other God-fearing religions out there, but I have specifically called upon Christians because that is the religion I am most familiar with.  And you guys and gals make up the majority of believers in the US (and worldwide), so it seemed natural to ask opinions from, and post about, the majority.   Of course, I welcome feedback from everyone on this topic, so if you want to chime in with your thoughts, regardless of your religious background, please do.
