You either love it or you hate it. The reality show Big Brother has been a worldwide sensation for about 15 years, first starting on Dutch television. It came here to the US 12 years ago and quickly gained a loyal fan base.
For those of you not familiar with the show (are you living under a rock??), it’s a game that follows a house full of people who have agreed to give up all contact with the outside world for the entire summer. The “big brother house” is full of cameras that are on 24 hours a day and the house guests are required to wear microphones from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. The house guests take part in competitions to gain power in the house and other little perks. Each week one or more people are evicted from the house after the head of household nominates two house guests for eviction. When it gets down to the final two players, seven evicted house guests (known as the “jury”) come in and vote for the person they feel deserves the $500,000 grand prize.
This year is the 14th season for the show on CBS and the loyal fans are still out there rooting for their favorite house guests. Have you been watching the show this year? What do you think about the season?
I think that the show has sucked the past two seasons. The competitions this year have been awful and most of the house guests are, for lack of a better word, repulsive. It irritates me that they keep bringing back past house guests, including people who have already won the grand prize. I think that each season should have all new people competing for the prize. However, I am still rooting for Big Brother 10 winner and current house guest Dan Gheesling. I want him to win again because, quite frankly, he’s the only one left in the house that I like.
And it seems to me that the producers of the show are running out of ways to make it original and interesting. Again, this season and last season were pretty huge snooze fests. I don’t know how much longer Big Brother can last with the way things have gone. I am getting to the point where I do not know I want to bother tuning in to new seasons. It seems pointless to watch a bunch of terribly dull people saying and doing terribly dull things.
What do you think? Is Big Brother on its last leg or can we look forward to several more years of reality television’s madhouse chock full of nutty inhabitants?
